Play and Education


Teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) are increasingly using games to support teaching and learning. You probably have gone through such an experience. If you haven't already, visit these sites: 

Conclusions as to the effectiveness of games for educational purposes differ; one particular review of relevant research indicated that mathematics was a subject where the use of games was usually superior to traditional classroom instruction.

A local study in Malaysia by University Technology Mara (Ibrahim and Yahaya 2009) suggests that computer games are gaining popularity in education and that nine out of ten Malaysian children are actively engaged in the task. The study concludes that the potential for using games in education in Malaysia is there and further research should help in formulating policies on the subject.
