Barriers to the Use of Games

Like any other innovation, the introduction of games as part of mainstream teaching and learning has its difficulties. A few commonly expressed challenges by Malaysian educators include the following:
  • The lack of appliances (computers, monitors, game consoles, headphones, speakers etc.)
  • Technical support in our schools to maintain equipment as well as trouble shoots software difficulties.
  • Shortage of skilled personnel in schools who can support indigenous game development with instructional design skills.
  • The difficulties of integrating games as an integral part of a curriculum - this in fact may prove to be the biggest deterrent of all.
If, as Malaysians, we get disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm to support the use of games in our schools, we can take comfort that these barriers are fairly global.
