Click on the following titles to read about a static visual image (Mystery Human Fossils Put Spotlight on China) and a dynamic one (The Great Sumatran Earthquake of December 2004) that illustrates the speed at which the Asian tsunami of 2004 travelled.

You have read and perhaps taught your class, lessons about the ancestry of the human race or the Asian tsunami. Imagine a situation where you can illustrate your lessons with the visuals you have just seen. The first illustration is a static display of a reconstruction of an ancient human from fossils; the second is a multi media dynamic display of the not just the tsunami as an event but also the human tragedy behind it. In your view what are the pedagogical values of presenting humanities data in the form of a text, a static visualisation and a dynamic visualisation. Present your response in a tabulated form (I have filled in one row for you):

Text

Static visualisation

Dynamic visualisation

1. Uses the sense of sight only (reading) and engages learner passively

Uses only vision but enhances the text with a reconstructed image enabling learner to appreciate the skills and power of reconstruction and illustration

Uses three stimuli (vision, audio and interaction). The power and the visual helps to illustrate the power of natural forces and the human tragedy it caused.
